What Your Dentist Hates to Hear
What dentists hate to hear
When you come into the office telling us that you hated your previous dentist.
We are a small community of professionals and we understand that everyone has their good days and bad days. We refuse to put one of our peers down. If you talk bad about them, the chances are you will talk bad about us when we have one of our bad days. Dentistry is hard we try to be 100% everyday, but it doesn't always work out that way. We are humans too.
When you have a high gag reflex- This one we can not blame our patients for, but it can be frustrating when the patient is uncooperative. Unfortunately, some people just have high gag reflexes; however, if you are willing to work with us and try to work through the discomfort, we will do our best to complete your treatment as fast as possible.
When you are late
For everyone time is money. If you are late, we will move on to the next patient so be prepared to wait. If we can no longer see you today our staff will kindly let you know and reschedule you. If you are in the middle of a phone conversation please just send a quick text saying that you are at the dentist.
When your phone rings and you insist on picking it up.
If your phone rings during our treatment, it can wait. If you are expecting something that urgent, kindly let us know that maybe today is not the best day for us to do extensive treatment and we will be happy to reschedule you. We understand you are busy as well, but while you are with us we just hope you treat us with the same respect. We will do our best to see you in the most efficient way we can.
When you tell us you hate the dentist-
You don't need to tell us how much you hate the dentist. We know that you are very anxious and we will do our best to accommodate you in the most comfortable way. If you really hate the dentist, it is more reason to come in for your regular hygiene and to improve your oral hygiene. My patients, who hate the dentist, only come to see us when they are in pain. This usually involves a root canal or extraction. If every time I saw the dentist I needed a root canal or extraction, I would hate the dentist as well.
When you seek drugs- We have ways to track your opioid use. We know when you come in at 5:00 PM on a Friday or Saturday stating that you have to be seen. We know you have shopped that bad tooth around for weeks and that you aren't going to do anything about it except use it to gain drugs. When you tell us you are allergic to Tylenol and Advil, which is nearly impossible. When you tell us only opioid drugs works for your pain, we know that you are already addicted.
When you assume Dentistry is free-
We went through an extra 8-14 years of schooling compared to the average high school student. We studied harder than everyone else to get to where we are today. We are in on average 300,000 in debt after school. We understand your health is important to you but we are a business. When you go to a restaurant or hotel you are expected to pay for your meal or stay in full prior to your departure. You are not sent a bill two weeks later and you don't refuse to pay it because it is expensive. When you are offered a service you pay for it because it is what is right for you and you find value in it.
My mentor once told me that we need to teach our patients to find value in Dentistry. When we are young we dream of cars, houses, status, and retirement. However, when you are 70, you may be too old to drive, your houses are given to your children and status no longer matters. What can you really do in your retirement? Travel and to eat. Without excellent oral health, you can not enjoy your food so what was the point of all the money you saved for retirement. Come schedule an appointment today so we can help you enjoy that delicious steak with all of your own teeth even at age 80.
